Der Frühling ist noch keine Woche alt, aber wir sehen noch keine Anzeichen, dass die Wintersurfsaison schon zu Ende sein sollte. Wir surften eben einen Epic-Sommerswell im Süden und kurz danach kam ein grosser Swell aus dem Norden. Honolua Bay war wieder mal am Qualmen, aber wie immer an diesen Tagen, surften nur die Jungs auf der Gästeliste. Als die Party dann aber etwas abflaute, durfte auch Mainereiner in die Röhre kucken, (oder besser aus der Röhre)

Right hander at Jaws

Another XXL-Size Swell hit the Hawaiian Islands this Morning. The Swell peaked at 17Sec 24feet and the conditions a Pe’ahi were as good as it gets: morning glass and 40-6-feet waves (depending who you talk to) that was the situation out there. On the cliff the situation was a little different, the parking situation was out of hand and the crowds came down to the bluff by the hundreds. There were Hotdog stands and soda vendors. More people went to Circus Jawas than to the county fair last year.

The show down in the ocean could not have been better, all the “Big Hitters” were out there including the 16 year old Kai Lenny who already is a regular at Jaws. The drama was unfolding when Laird Hamilton took a tumble on a wave and got hit by his own board that dislocated his shoulder. According to the gossip on the cliff, he then surfed two more waves. A bit later local Big Wave Legend, SUP pioneer and Maui County Lifeguard Chief, Archie Kelapa broke his leg while getting washed in the white water. He and Laird Hamilton shared a ride on the helicopter getting airlifted out of the break. Kai Lenny took his first serious wipe out on the left at Jaws and sits at home now with a serious headache. This winter already had some epic days at Jaws but this one was by far the most dramatic one.

At the same time the locals at Honolua Bay, which turned into a big wave spot it self, were charging some hellish rides themselves. The sets at the cave were in the solid 6-8+ range. Due to the lack of trade winds the wave was not as clean as many hoped. The rides were still sick and as the next pictures prove there was tons of love to spread by the locals. I am sure the guy under the lip was not feeling much love getting burned like that.

We definitely had enough action for one day that is for sure, the action shall continue tomorrow.

There is so much action going on right now I don’t even know where to start. Jaws had some of the best days in years, at the same time The Eddie was going on, and the girls Billabong Pro Maui was going on in perfect conditions at Honolua Bay.

On thing is for sure: I have colleted more and better video material this November/December than in all winter combined last year.

Hawaii bereitet sich auf den wohl grössten Swell der modernen Surfgeschichte vor. Ein stationäres Tiefdruckgebiet (949mB Gestern und 956mB Heute), schickt einen Swell in Richtung Hawaii, der den legändaren Swell von 1969 übertreffen könnte. Wir erwarten die ersten Sets des Swells Montag Morgen. Die aktuellen Daten der Wetterboje vor Kauai liegen bei 19Sekunden und 17.1Fuss. Dies sind wohl die ersten Vorboten von dem was noch kommen soll. Alle Einsatzkräfte im Staate Hawaii sind in Alarmbereitschaft und es werden Überflutungen befürchtet für tiefer gelegenen Landabschnitte in Küsten nähe.

Contest Update

Der Swell legte Heute eine kleinere Pause ein die Wellen bei Sunset waren aber immer noch 20 Fuss. Die Organisatoren hatten auch gar keine andere Wahl, laut Vorhersagen soll der Küstenabschnitt bei Sunset speziell gefärdet sein. Es war ein super Finaltag, das Wetter konnte besser nicht sein und die Bedingungen auf dem Wasser waren gerade zu perfekt. Dusty Payne aus Maui und Mick Fanning dominierten klar den ersten Semi, der Zweite wurde klar von Joel Parkinson, dem Contest Favoriten, dominiert.  Sunny Garcia kam auf den zweiten Platz jedoch gute 6 Punkte hinter Parkinson.

Sunny eröffnete den Final dann jedoch sehr stark mit einem super langen Barrelride und punktete 9.47, erst gegen Ende des Finals übernahm Parkinson wieder die Führung mit einer 6.17 Punktewelle. Mick Fanning surfte nicht gut genug um mit den Führenden mit zu halten, auch Dusty Payne konnte nicht an seinen guten Semi anknüpfen und wurde mit nur 2.43 Punkten vierter.

The High Surf Advisory took full place on Mauis North West and North Shore, with perfect conditions, there were a full range of spots going off today, breaking in the 4-6feet range (hawaiian) you may easy double that number, if you live some where else. There were Tow-Ins going on and great barrel rides at various spots.

The Reef Hawai’ian Pro at Ali’i Beach Park in Hale’iwa started today. The waves over there were very small and the conditions were onshore, but the contest kicked off anyway. There were no significant happenings, the only intersting News were that Andy Irons was not given a contest entry fort hat event, for some unexplained reasons. I was also looking for germanys own Marlon Lipke to be on the list of contestants but were not able to find him. We may expect him at Sunset or Pipe.

Wir sind wieder mal in einer typischen Situation für Maui: Der Nationale Wetterservice in Honolulu deklarierte eine Highsurf Advisory für alle Süd Küsten von Hawai’i. Die Messbojen vor der Küste messen den Swell mit 3Fuss 19Sekunden, nicht schlecht denkt man sich da. Auch ich war um 5.40 wach zum Surfen. Doch was man vorfindet in der Dämmerung ist alles andere als High Surf, die Wellen waren gerade mal Schulterhoch wenn das Set kam. Die Bedingungen waren aber perfekt und die Ritte gut 100 – 150meter lang. Also kein Grund zum klagen.
