I was just going over the pictures of today from our boat trip to Honolua Bay when I discovered something funny on one of my pictures. “The Bay” was 6feet solid with some 8 feet sets, the local surf elite was having a “Surf-Fest” in “Barrel - Hausen”. I saw some crazy stuff today like 2 surfers in one barrel, guys getting nearly run over and me duck-diving under the lip while a guys was airdropping 3 feet from my head.

This is all nothing to what I discovered in my picture: There were actually 2 people snorkeling out there today…INSANE! The guy in the back is getting shacked and there are people snorkeling. That tops it for me!

Das war ja wohl die Härte Heute bei Honolua Bay. Die Wellen waren wieder einmal absolut perfekt und solide. Die ganze Lokale Surfelite war am „Chargen“ und es war wieder einmal ein Tag an dem nur die geladenen Gäste die guten Wellen surfen, der Rest schaute zu. Ich sah einige harte Szenen im Wasser: 2 Surfer in einer Barrel und ein Typ der beim Cutback vom Brett springen musste um den Typen im Wasser nicht zu überfahren, er sprang ueber den Tyepen im Wasser hinweg und verfehlte denn einen anderen nur ganz knapp. Ich selber sah einen Surfer  nur 1m vom mir beim „Airdrop“ als ich gerade noch unter der Lippe weg Tauchen konnte. Das ist aber  alles nichts im vergleich zu was ich auf meinem Foto Heute Abend entdeckte: Da waren doch tatsächlich 2 Touristen am Schnorcheln dort draussen Heute: KRANK! Der Typ hinten ist in der Tube und vorne sind sie am Schnorcheln, das ist wohl die Härte.

Wir hatten bestimmt einen Erlebnisreichen Tag Heute, wir Surften sogar noch eine Kopfhohewelle auf unserem 10m Katamaran an einem Surfspot südlich von Honolua. Dazu dann aber mehr Morgen und auch mehr coole Fotos von Honolua Bay Heute.

The buoy this morning came in at a reading of 24 Seconds and 6.2feet. This is  very unusual data normally the Swell Period and the height are much closer. Through the day the periodes became smaller and the height increased. Now I wonder what this is doing to the surf. Are breaking waves bigger on 24sec – 6feet or on 19sec – 13feet. One thing is for sure I don’t remember seeing a period like this since the legendary winter of 1998. I guess we just have to wait and see who that swell will translate into waves at Honolua Bay, tomorrow we will be going out there on my friends boat to surf and picknick. I am sure it will be interesting to anchor the boat when the 8footers will peel around the corner at the Cave.

Die Wetterboje Heute Morgen zeigte einen Swell mit 24sek und 6fuss an, das sind eher ungewöhnliche Daten, normalerweise liegen die Sekunden und Fuss näher beisammen. Während des Tages dann nahmen die Perioden etwas ab und die Swell Höhe etwas zu. Was mich eigentlich zu einer interessanten Frage bringt: Brechen die Wellen höher bei 24sek – 6fuss oder bei 19Sek – 13fuss. Na ja, eines ist auf jeden Fall sicher: Das letzte Mal als ich eine Periode von 24Sekunden sah war im legendären Winter von 1998. Wir werden es ja selber sehen Morgen wenn wir mit dem Boot meines Kollegen zur Honolua Bay fahren, das wird ein obercooler Surf- und Picknicktag. Das Boot zu ankern wird sicher noch interessant wenn die Sets mit 8fuss um die Ecke kommen bei der „Cave“

Unser Produkte Manager und alles “Paratmacher” Mr. O’Barns ist ober gestocked. Unsere 4 SUP Modelle sind eben eingetroffen und werden an der ISPO zum ersten mal an den Markt gebracht. Die Bretter sind erste Sahne, die wurden nämlich von unserem Chefen-Shaper auf Hawai’i entwickelt. Das “River” Modell wird alle stehen lassen auf unseren Binnengewässern das hat ein spezielles Unterwasserschiff für Seen und Flüsse.

24 hours after the crazy swell at Honolua Bay and Jaws things returned to normal. “The Bay” presented itself back in its friendly mood with more manageable size waves and crowds. The swell was on the decline, in fact wave heights were nowhere near where they were yesterday.

The crazy thing is that the wave models show a scenario of another swell hitting Hawaii sometime next weekend and that one might be even bigger than the last one. This is the craziest winter ever. Even if there were no waves for the next six month this winter would still go down in history.

Surf Check 24 Stunden nach den Fotos von Gestern: Honolua Bay präsentiert sich wieder etwas freundlicher als Gestern. Die Wellen und die “Crowds” sind wieder etwas freundlicher. Unglaublich wie schnell es jeweils geht bis die Wellen wieder kleiner sind.

Das Krasse ist, dass das nächste Tiefdruckgebiet bei Japan schon am Start ist Richtung Alaska und laut Wettermodellen soll dieses Tief einen Swell produzieren der den letzen in den Schatten stellt. Dies ist der unglaublichte Winter hier, auch wenn ab Morgen für 6 Monate keine Wellen mehr kämen würde dieser Winter schon in die Surfgeschichte Hawaiis eingehen.

Right hander at Jaws

Another XXL-Size Swell hit the Hawaiian Islands this Morning. The Swell peaked at 17Sec 24feet and the conditions a Pe’ahi were as good as it gets: morning glass and 40-6-feet waves (depending who you talk to) that was the situation out there. On the cliff the situation was a little different, the parking situation was out of hand and the crowds came down to the bluff by the hundreds. There were Hotdog stands and soda vendors. More people went to Circus Jawas than to the county fair last year.

The show down in the ocean could not have been better, all the “Big Hitters” were out there including the 16 year old Kai Lenny who already is a regular at Jaws. The drama was unfolding when Laird Hamilton took a tumble on a wave and got hit by his own board that dislocated his shoulder. According to the gossip on the cliff, he then surfed two more waves. A bit later local Big Wave Legend, SUP pioneer and Maui County Lifeguard Chief, Archie Kelapa broke his leg while getting washed in the white water. He and Laird Hamilton shared a ride on the helicopter getting airlifted out of the break. Kai Lenny took his first serious wipe out on the left at Jaws and sits at home now with a serious headache. This winter already had some epic days at Jaws but this one was by far the most dramatic one.

At the same time the locals at Honolua Bay, which turned into a big wave spot it self, were charging some hellish rides themselves. The sets at the cave were in the solid 6-8+ range. Due to the lack of trade winds the wave was not as clean as many hoped. The rides were still sick and as the next pictures prove there was tons of love to spread by the locals. I am sure the guy under the lip was not feeling much love getting burned like that.

We definitely had enough action for one day that is for sure, the action shall continue tomorrow.

OK so I write always about the surf, which makes since since we are a surf company, but last night we did something completely different.

Every year the PGA (Professional Golf Association) starts here in Kapalua. Thanks to my wife’s job at Kapalua we got to go to the official Gala-Dinner with the following concert. This year “The World Classic Rockers” were the Starts of the night, they are a band assembled from former Band Member of: Steppenwolf, Journey, Santana, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Toto and Boston.

I was just born in the seventies but off course still well familiar with their Classic Rock songs. It was great to see the “Rock Grandpas” rocking out like back in the days. I felt like 70ies Sex Drugs and Rock n’Roll…but I think it was just the Gin Tonics in me. We were rocking with them! After the concert, they were playing a “hana hou” coming back to the stage inviting people to the stage. It was crazy, during the last song half of the crowd was up there on stage with these guys rocking out and the other half was cheering. Now that was a great party.

Needles to say that I was a bit woozy this morning at 5.30am when my daughter woke up demanding her milk. Lucky me, I have a great wife who took care of things -→ Kussi!

On a surf note: The next Monster Swell is expected to hit the buoys sometime tomorrow or even tonight.

Sorry to our english readers, yesterday was all about how a greenhorn from Switzerland and a Wannabe-Charger Swiss Ex-Pat conquered 8-10feet Lanes.
Long story short we had some good waves but paddled against the current more than anything.

Today was a whole different story: Our guest Bolger and Spreckelsville Visitor Marc M. Jäggi sent me his pictures from a completely different Ho’okipa from yesterday. No one was surfing and it was a big soup of whitewater and most waves closed out. At almost the same time I was at Honolua Bay watching how the North West Swell finally wrapped ist way into the Bay. The conditions at the bay were rather fair while at Ho’okipa no one was thinking about surfing. Marc told me that there was some Tow-In action at Jaws in the morning, but he missed it so he sent us a picture of empty Jaws in the afternoon. (Too bad we don’t have a Jet ski)

In the meanwhile the conditions cleaned up in the afternoon, we had a cold front passing though and behind it the regular north east winds filled in, which made H-Bay look world class again.

Heute war Ho’okipa (Aussprache: Ho’okipa nicht Huukipa) fett am dampfen, so fett, dass Marc Jäggi und ich uns erst gut überlegten raus zu paddeln.

What a day!

Marc Jäggi, Swisscharger und Mitbetreiber des Zürcher Surf-Tourveranstalters surftours.ch, kam eben vor 10 Tagen auf der Insel an.
Nach gutem Abschätzen der Lage entschieden wir uns, dass wir uns diesen Tag nicht von den einigen 10 Fuss Sets verderben lassen wollten. Wir nahmen also unsere Eier in die Hand und paddelten raus. Der Lifeguard am Strand wollte noch kurz wissen ob wir diesen Size auch handhaben können und warnte uns vor der Strömung weiter draußen.

Rauspaddeln bei Ho’okipa ein einem grossen Tag ist schon ein Erlebnis für sich selber. Wir waren gerade im Riffkanal angekommen, als eines dieser besagen Sets ankam, eine mannshohe Weißwasserwand ist schwer zu „Duck Diven“ und ich wurde 20meter nach hinten gesogen und krachte in Marc der auch gerade zermühlt wurde. So viel zum raus paddeln.

Solide Sachen.

Draussen im Lineup angekommen, machten wir es uns dann gemütlich bei Kaffe und Kuchen und warteten auf das nächste Set. Wir waren froh, dass sich die Sets Zeit liessen. Der Wind war nun auch schon etwas stärker und blies gute 10 – 15kt seitlich off shore.

Die Sets bei Lanes (Links aussen bei Ho’okipa) federn sehr lange in den Wind und erst im letzten Moment wirft die Lippe aus. Es ist also nichts mit easy Anpaddeln, Anleiten und dann Take Off, sondern eher: Paddeln gegen den Wind wie Wild, alles Wasser im Gesicht, nichts mehr sehen, Eier runter geschluckt und ab durch die Mitte. Es dauerte ein gute weile bis mir dieses Kunststück zum ersten mal gelang, die Belohnung stellte sich jedoch sofort ein. Auch unser Kollege aus Zürich chargte wie ein Local Boy, wenn ich das Bild das ich von seinem Take Off im Kopf habe ausdrucken könnte wäre das wohl ein Bild für eine Zeitschrift: Solide 8 Fuss, der Surfer im Vertikal und dahinter eine Barrel mit einer vom Wind verblasenen Lippe.

Anyway, wir wurden gut belohnt dort draussen, aber man muss auch sagen, dass wir fast 2 Stunden gegen Strömung und Wind angepaddelt haben und Zahl der gesurften Wellen weit unter dem Durchschnitt lag.

Zurück am Strand waren wir dann super gestocked, dass uns die Eier nicht rasiert wurden und zur Feier des Tages machte Makani „so und so“,  Pro Surfer von der Big Island noch ein Foto von uns. Der Tag war komplett und es war noch nicht mal 13.00 Uhr.
