Pictures of the day are yesterdays news but so nice

Local time: Gestern

Honolua Bay was so nice yesterday and the day before and I took so many pictures that I decide to put on some more pictures from the past few days on the blog.bay-perfection

The Billabong Pro Maui 2009 was a great success, in fact you can read all the details on Epic Surf (German online Surfmag) they picked up my article I sent them.

Billabong Pipeline Masters

I have to acknowledge with the coverage the Vans Triple Crown is getting, no one needs a blog like mine to update themselves on the contest. Everybody knows the Vans Triple Crowns website and they do an awesome job keeping everybody up to date. If you did not yet, you should go to the Heats on Demand section and see Andy Irons heat against Marcus Hickman the guys fully crashed: One was going left and the other one was going right. Also worth seeing is Aritz Aranburu winning over Mauis Dusy Payne who entered the contest with a wild card. John John Florence, the 17 year old Pipeline local is also very remarkable to watch.

Off course I will try to make my way to O’ahu to film the finals and bring you a great video of all the highlights. Just will depend on the timing and my work schedule.

Until then Schamauz van Dauz,

Your Mike

Video of the Week - Jaws action

There is so much action going on right now I don’t even know where to start. Jaws had some of the best days in years, at the same time The Eddie was going on, and the girls Billabong Pro Maui was going on in perfect conditions at Honolua Bay.

On thing is for sure: I have colleted more and better video material this November/December than in all winter combined last year.

Eddie did go today!

The big news of the day are off course that Eddie did go today. The officials made the call this morning at 8am. The swell might have not been as big as in the years before but still was big enough and the conditions were perfect, so EDDIE WENT today for the first time since 2004.

This year was also the 25th anniversary of the Eddie Aikau Invitational, in its 25 year history the contest was actually only on 8 times so far. This time the title went to California Big Wave Surfer Greg Long followed by Kelly Slater.

In the mean while the Billabong Pro Maui had its opening day Honolua Bay in perfect 6 - 8 feet Waves in top notch conditions. The swell was somewhat inconsistent but when the set came around the corner at the Lipoa Point the girls were in for a real treat.

Melanie Bartels scored a nice 9.17 with that barrel in the picture below.

In fact there were many waves being left unridden during the contest, these girls are really lucky to surf this waves by themselves, on a normal day like this there are at least 40 guys out, so it was also a great opportunity to take some nice fotos of Honolua Bay without crowds littering the shot.

As far as the results go you can see the quarter final pairings below, the swell continues to deliver great waves for the next 2 days. There is a good chance Billabong might wrap up the contest tomorrow already and we would have our first Triple Crown Champion.

I will keep you posted.

Scheeezn,

Mike

P.S. You can see now how the waves at Honolua Bay are significantly smaller than on O’ahu on the same swell on the same day.

Pictures of the day, December 7th – Perfect Jaws

Local time: all day

morning-glass-copyEarly morning set

Jaws had one of its best days in  a long time despite the swell was not as big as anticipated. According to the Media we were preparing fort he largest swell since 1969. The buoy readings are still running at plus minus 17 Seconds 18 Feet, which is still big, but now where near the swell I witnessed on new years day of 1999 with readings of 20 Seconds 30 Feet.

helicopter-and-rider-copy

Never the less, Jaws was open for business today and the world elite of Big Wave Surfing was out there. By 9.00am I counted somewhat 25 Jet skis, 5 Boats and 3 Helicopters hovering over the break. There were some massive sets coming through and guys were scoring some good rides on the right as well as on the left. I also saw guys going over the falls and 2 Jet skies ending up on the rocks.

Off course I am also woring on a video to release soon, for now enjoy these pictures.

Swell of a lifetime on the way

Local time: tomorrow all day

npac

There were some sick barrels comming through. Solide 6-8feet and some elite surfers were showing how it is done, plus all the Pro-Surfergirls were out there too, the Billabong Pro Maui is kicking off on Monday Night with the Annual Party and the day after the contest starts.

For now “The Bay” is in the hand of the locals. We are also expecting another swell to hit on Monday, according to the Forecasters this swell could be the biggest swell Hawaii has seen in 40 years. Possibly topping the Legendary Swell from 1969. I can’t wait to see that.
