Pictures of the day, December 19th – pure Freude

Local time: den ganzen Tag

Mike

P.S. Der Swell soll bis Montag halten.

Pictures of the day

Now that the “Wave-Circus” is over, things are quiet again here on Hawaii. The ASP is taking a break until the Tahiti Contest, Jaws has gotten quiet for now and the surf industry is breaking down its tents at the North Shore of O’ahu. Even the ocean seems to take a break for now, the waves are 2 -3 feet up at the bay, but the wind is blowing north so most or our surf spots are on shore right now.

A great opportunity to feature another nice cloudy sunset from the West Side. In fact I decide to post 2 Pictures:

On facing the sun set and the other one facing exactly away from it something else for a change.

Video of the week

So I flew to O’ahu on Sunday in anticipation of the Billabong Pipeline Masters. Saturday the place was cooking and the TV announcers said there is a good chance for them to wrap the contest up, they buoys also showed somewhat the same swell over night. I got up at 5am drove to the airport, boarded a plane, flew to Honolulu, took a shuttle bus to the car rental and drove to Ehukai beach park. - The contest was OFF. What a bummer, but on behalf of the people who make the call, they were right Pipeline was not that good at all, but then on the other hand they ran the contest today and it was not much better than Sunday.

Anyway, enought of it already, the final between Taj Burrow and Kelly Slater was exciting and Taj scored the better waves. CONGRATULATIONS TAJ! Your airs rule!

I could have bootleged the whole thing from my TV, but that is lame and only loosers do that, there fore I you get to see who Pipeline looks like on a regualr day.

Enjoy my little contribution:

Picture of the day - off the wall

Local time: 14.30 hours HST

The Pipemasters today was closed for business, all the masters were not on site today. The forecast looked good yesterday so I decided to take the trip to the North Shore to film the event. Unfortunately the event was not on, but by looking at Pipe it became obvous real quick why it was not on. The surf was too small and there were many close outs. Other than that the North Shore turly was  the 7 Mile Miracle today. The conditions were perfect and all the spots between Hale’iwa and Sun Set looked nice at a small 2-4 feet ocasionally 6feet or evenbigger like that freak set I cought on camera at “off the wall” in the afternoon shortly before heading back to the airport.

Well, somtimes you have to take the gamble, I would have been much more disapointed if I stood at home and the contest would have been on, at least this way I was able to join the perfect waves for some good fun.

Cheers,

Mike

Picture of the day goes to Mick Fanning ASP World Champion 2009

Mick Fanning Worldchamp

What a day at Pipe today. The waves were at a nice 6 - 8 feet today and the conditions were more than good. The trade winds were very moderate to non existent. A great day for Mick Fanning to win his second ASP World Title. The contest did only to to the 3rd round today but there was only one man that could take the title from Fanning and that was Joel Parkinson.

It was a nail biting situation Parkinson was behind in his heat and needed a 6.63 to advance, Fanning was alreday paddling out for his 4th round heat. The heat for Joel Parkinson was almost over as the set approached only 30 seconds before the horn he paddled for the wave but got lip launched by the closeout. That was the moment Mick Fanning realized he just became ASP World Champion. What a moment.

I also have a great video form the the Billabong Maui Pro 2009 where Stephanie Gilmore cleaned up for the 2nd time. The professional surfing world seems to be in the hands of the Aussies for this year.
