SURFHUND® Writers Contest 09/10
Mit einer ganz besondere Aktion, nämlich dem großen Writers Contest 09/10 werden Surfer und solche, die es noch werden wollen, aufgerufen, aktiv Beiträge zu schreiben. In den  Kategorien Reportage, ausgefallene Surftrips und offene Kategorie können Texte inklusive Bild- und Videomaterial per Email eingereicht werden. Die eingereichten Artikel werden bis 30. April 2010 im Onlinemagazin (www.surfhund.ch) zu lesen sein. Unter allen Einsendungen wird der kreativste Beitrag ermittelt. Danach heißt es relaxen, surfen und Sonne tanken auf Bali. The winds were already at 15 – 18kt at 9am today and the national weather service posted a small craft advisory, the swell was at about 2-4feet. We did set sail on the Manu Kai at about 10am and headed straight north to Honolua Bay. We had to motor all the way, the winds were coming NNE so there was no sailing, if we wanted to make it there in a good time.

We got there just before noon, unfortunately the surf was crap. The winds were too much from the north and the swell was too small as well. We paddled out anyway, just to say we did it.

Sailing back was going off: Hooting north easterly trades up to 25kts and 2-4feet waves from behind. It was sailing at its best. Phil our captain knows these waters like the back of his hand. We were doing a good 10 – 12kts, Phil was driving his catamaran off the open ocean swell, which made the boat accelerate even more.

We had good fun for sure.

O’Neil Worldcup at Sunset, Contest update:

Sunset was going today at about 4-6 feet. Due to the strong winds Round of 96 got called off after Heat #8. Joel Centeio the winner of Hale’iwa did advance to the next round as well as Andy Irons who surfed his first heat today. Other than that it was a pretty average day out there.

I am sure most of you are thinking this guys always posts pictures of Honlula Bay, are there no other waves in his neighborhood? Well…not really, the surf live in Winter on Westmaui pretty much revolves around H-Bay. There are some other spots here and there depending on swell direction but not really worth mentioning. So as far as the beloved Bay goes, it was an average day today sets in 2-4 range with the usual crowds.

My thought was: Today I post the picture I took of the guy painting at the Reef Hawaiian Pro 2009. I made the surroundings black and white to make the picture pop a little more.

Contest update

Carissa Moore wins the Gidget Pro at Sunset. This girl simply surfs amazing. I saw her surfing at HSSA event in Ho’okipa surfing better than all the boys. She is only 17 years old and will join the women ASP next year after her High School graduation.

In second place came Sally Fitzbibbons from Australia and in third the current World Champion Stephanie Gillmore also from Australia. The 4th place went to Alana Blanchard who won the Vans Pro in Hale’iwa.

So far the Hawaiians look good on the leader board, 3 Events were won each time by a Hawaiian.

The men’s round today did not go further than the Round of 128. From a European point of view there is still hope. Ruben Gonzalez from Portugal advanced in his heat and Aritz Aranburu from Euskati had will be surfing tomorrow in Round of 96. Unfortunately Hodei Collazo did not advance from his heat today.

The swell was picking up today and is expected to be at his peak within the next day, so it is looking good for the event to be on tomorrow.

After almost a full week of great surf, the waves continue to hit Honolua Bay. Today the waves were significantly smaller than the last 2 days, but the crowds were still up. The sets were somewhat inconsistent so once a set came everybody was eager to get a wave. I surfed my little “Secret Spot” with 5 guys out, all friendly and relaxed, just no barrels.

Contest update O’Neil Worldcup at Sunset and the Giget Pro at Sunset

The swell all over was on the decline today. The sets at Sunset were probably somewhere in the 4-8feet range winds were blowing side-offshore.
The womens event went through the qualifications the next action we will see are the quarter finals. The girls showed a good performance, it will be interesting to see who advances to the semies. World Champ Stephanie Gilmore and Alana Blanchard, who won in Haleiwa are still in the race.

With the declning swell the mens round of 128 only went as far as 8 Heats to make room fort he girls in the afternoon. That much is sure, the winner of Haleiwa, Joel Centeio won his heat clear with 13 points.

At this time it is not clear if the contest continues tomorrow, the current buoy readings are at 8feet 9 seconds.

Not a good sign.

Hawaii was under a high surf advisory and the conditions could not have been better for the final day of the Reef Hawaiian Pro 2009 in Hale’iwa. The worlds top surfer showed a great performance and some sick barrels were ridden was well. See for your self MikeJuckerHawaiiTV was live there to capture some legendary rides on camera.

The surf is up, up and up here in the islands. The start of the O’Neil Worldcup had to be postponed due to high surf. In fact we were under a high surf warning today. Sunset on O’ahu was closing out at 18 – 20feet and Jaws received sets in the 15-25 feet range and Honolua had the biggest day in years with the bigger sets in the 7-9feet range. (all Hawaiian measurements)

We have no complaints this November, this ist he best early season I can think of so far. I never seen Pe’ahi breaking as early as on Thanksgiving. It was not a macking day, but considerably big, there were only 3 skies out and it seemed some of the Local Boys had fun towing in.

The evening session at Honolua Bay was a party in it self. Guys were riding barrels you could drive a truck through. It was also considerably crowded and numerous rain showers made the visibility bad to take pictures.

There will be definitely more video to come, but now I have to finish up the footage from  Hale’iwa.

Since it was such a nice day yesterday, I decided to post another picture from Hale’iwa. You would think with the waves in the picture that it would not have been a good day for boating, but the opposite was the case. The tradewinds were not too strong and the seas were mostly calm. There was just a long-interval-swell travelling through the water unleashing its power on the reefs at the Famous 7 Mile Miracle and yes it was miracoulus day.

What a great day.

Surfevent der Superlative

Es war ein grossartiger Tag an der North Shore of O’ahu im Ali’i Beach Park in Hale’iwa. Die Weltelite des Surfen war anwesend und gab sich ein Stelldichein zum Finaltag des ersten Events der Vans Triple Crown, dem Reef Hawaiian Pro 2009. Die besten 32 Surfer die noch übrig waren surften um ein Weiterkommen in die Viertelsfinale. Europa war in der „Round of 32“ vertreten durch die beiden Basken Hodei Collazo und Aritz Aranburu, beid konntn sich jedoch nicht gegen die Konkurrenz durchsetzen und kamen nicht in die Quarterfinals.

Die grossen Namen in den Quarter Finals waren Sunny Garcia und Joel Parkinson. Parkinson surfte in der Vorrunde die absolute Knüller Welle mit einer Barrel bei der keiner mehr geglaubt hat, dass da einer noch vorne raus kommt, Parko kam aber raus und kassierte eine Blanke 10 und wurde so mit als grosser Favorit gehandelt. Leider waren die Quarters aber Endstation für den Australier. Das Selbe Schicksal holte auch Sunny Garcia ein, der sich sein Comeback sicher etwas glanzvoller Vorgestellt hatte. Nach seiner 2. Welle mit nur einem Turn war er sichtlich frustriert. Es war nun auch schon Nachmittag und der Swell war merklich am abklingen. Die Sets kamen in immer grösser werdenden Abständen und somit wurden die Heats auch mehr und mehr durch die Wellenselektion bestimmt. Der Viertelsfinal von Sunny Garcia wurde sogar nach 10 Minuten neu gestartet da keiner eine einzige Welle surfte.
(ASP Rule Book: Wenn in einem Heat für 10 Minuten keine Welle gesurft wird muss neu gestartet werden.)

Joel Parkinson ready to land

Die hervorragenden Surfer der Viertelsfinale waren die Gebrüder Hobgood, Hale’iwas Local Boy Joel Centeio, der Franzose aus Tahiti Alain Riou und Maui Local Hank Gaskell.

Wer in den Final kommen wollte musste nicht nur gut Surfen sondern sich auch gut platzieren im Lineup und die Geduld nicht verlieren. Im ersten Semi gelang dies am Besten Joel Centeio und Jay Thompson aus Australien der von den Viertels gerade noch ins Semi rutschte. Im zweiten Semi waren es dann ganz klar Alain Riou aus Tahiti und CJ Hobgood die, die richtigen Wellen erwischten und auch rippten.

Der Final konnte dann atemberaubender nicht mehr sein: Die Wellen liessen zwar auf sich warten, aber wenn das Set dann kam, kamen gleich 3 - 5 Wellen miteinander und alle in gut  6-8feet. Zuerst war CJ Hobgood vorne der mit seinen unglaublichen „backside floatern“ punktete (Lip in gut 2.5m Höhe) aber dann kam Joel Centeio mit einem Barrelride, kam sauber raus und punktete (9.7) sich vor CJ. Der wieder um, konterte beim nächsten Set mit einem Backside Barrel, aber die Punkte reichten dann nicht mehr für den ersten Platz. Jay Thompson mischte eine Zeitlang mit erwischte dann aber keine gute Setwelle mehr und verlor somit auch die Chance gut zu Punkten. Etwas enttäuschend war Alain Riou, die erste Hälfte des Heats surfte er keine einzige Welle und verlor somit jede Chance an die führenden an zu schließen. Er wurde noch Vierter.

Die Freude am Strand war dem entsprechend gross als das Finlal zu Ende gehupt wurde und Local Boy Joel aus Hale’iwa gewann. Er kassierte ebenfalls gleich noch 20K Dollars oben drauf. Das Reef Hawaiian Pro in Haleiwa ist ein WQS Event und mit 145K der Event mit dem meisten Preisgeld. Somit zieht der Triple Crown Zirkus nun weiter nach Sunset zum O’Neil Worldcup of Surfing, wein weiterer Event der WQS und zum Schluss kommt dann die Kroenung mit dem Billabong Pipemasters ein Event der ASP World Tour.
